President's Message —
Winter 2011/2012
Hello Kappa Tau Members,
The holiday season is a wonderful time to reflect on what we are thankful for. This past year when so many people suffered incredible loss, as in the wake of Tropical Storm Irene right here in our home state, it is a meaningful reflection. Kappa Tau was able to support a member’s family in their recovery from the storm. I am thankful and proud to be part of such a caring organization. Personally, I am thankful for my health, a prerequisite for all other things I am thankful for, not only because I am fighting a common minor cold today but because I see so much distress caused by illness and disease every day.
I am of course very thankful for my family and friends and feel so fortunate to have such loving and rich relationships and not a day goes by that I don’t reflect on this. The thing I am most grateful for is being a nurse. The profession of nursing has given me so many opportunities in my working life from being a critical care traveling nurse to a nurse practitioner caring for patients and their families living with chronic and acute heart failure. As a nurse, we are privileged to be intimately involved in patients’ lives at a time when they need our expert care most. In addition, as a nurse leader am thankful to be in the position of opportunity as well as obligation to bring along the next generation of nurses. One of STTI President Suzanne Prevost’s “Give Back to Move Forward” Call to Action points is, create your legacy, whether it be sharing your passion, mentoring your skills or encouraging other nurses to excel. Research studies have shown that nurses who demonstrate high levels of gratitude have increased empathy and are more positive. As we serve our patients and lead our colleagues, communicate an attitude of gratitude it will be healing to others as well as ourselves.
Thank you for allowing me to serve.
