Member of the Month: Cathy Fetten

Cathy Fetten was newly inducted to Kappa Tau as a community leader this past fall.
She is originally from Long Island before moving to Vermont 13 years ago. She lives in Waitsfield with her significant other, Jerry of 8 years and her two German Short haired pointers, Rita and Ruby. Cathy loves the outdoors and doing activities such as skiing, hiking and kayaking.
Cathy has been a nurse for 3 years, taking the “nontraditional”
journey. She obtained a psychology degree from UVM in 2002. Three years
ago, she graduated from Norwich with her BSN as a Freeman Scholar.
But before this she worked in the advertising marketing business area in New York where some of her clients were hospitals. This experience as well as caring for her ill step-father, is where she discovered health care was her calling. Physical therapy was initially appealing to her but realized nursing had more flexibility and variety to offer.
She also worked at Central
Vermont Medical Center in their cardiac rehab and stress lab facility as a tech and where
she still continues to work per diem. This is where she has learned and fine tuned her
primary skills in cardiovascular preventative care.
She is fortunate to have a mentor, Sherry Mayo, who was a clinical nurse manager
in pediatrics, while she was going to school. “She really helped guide me towards
McClure 5 to do cardiology, and she was right I really love it.” “Sherry is an NP now in
Rutland; she was always pushing me to do more and is a big reason why I have applied to
Stonybrook’s NP program.” Cathy’s dream job is to do preventative cardiology in the
primary care setting.
In two weeks, Cathy and a colleague will be attending a training session in the Bahamas to become certified in Yoga of the Heart. She and her colleague developed a business plan and have plans to incorporate this modality into her practice.
Cathy, when asked why she joined Kappa Tau stated, “I am really interested in complementary therapies so I attended a research night where Betty Rambur and Judy Cohen’s research was presented on Movement Meditation. So it seemed like a perfect fit and a great way to meet new people.”
