Beast Wars Neo

Beast Wars Neo is a Transformers cartoon series and toy line from Japan, produced by Takara in the late ninties. The characters all have beast forms, many of which are unique in the transformers line. There is a racoon, giraffe, rabbit, dimetrodon, gigantosaur, and penguin, among others. Currently, i have in my collection, Longrack the Cybertoron (Maximal) giraffe, Guiledart the Destoron (Predacon) tricerotops, Big Convoy, the Cybertoron woolly mammoth, and Magmatron the Destoron, who consists of three dinosaurs (a gigantosaur, an elasmosaur, and a queztalcoatlus) who combine into a single robot mode. Those familar with Tranformers Generation One will notice that these modern toys have far greater poseability, achieved through the liberal use of ball joints in their design. On the down side, the materials used are 100 percent plastic, you will not find even a little bit of die cast metal in them. More pictures coming soon.

Big Convoy vs. Magmatron

Big Convoy and Magmatron are the opposing leaders in this transformers line, and both are outstanding toys. The transformations are complex, requiring careful rotations of parts through tight spaces. In robot mode, Big Convoy can be set into many neat battle stances, and even has a little removable Matrix of Leadership in his chest, for lighting the Cybertoron's darkest hour. His beast mode is rather static, with legs that cannot be moved, but there is a neat gimic where you pull a lever and the trunk rears up, and the horns can be made to move menacingly by pulling back the ears. Magmatron's best feature is the three dinosaurs, particularly the queztalcoatlus (which is sort of like a pterodactyl) when you pull his tail back, his arms move and make the wings flap. The elasmosaur is a sea going dinosaur with a long, articulated neck, and front fins that move forward when you pull the rear ones back. The gigantosaur doesn't do much, but looks cool. They do not have individual robot modes, but they combine into one single robot, which is impressive looking but unfortunately not as poseable as big convoy. Both big convoy and Magmatron have lots of small pieces, so they should be kept away from small children. I think the little ones would find the complexity of their transformations rather frustrating, anyway.

Longrack vs. Guiledart

Longrack the giraffe and Guiledart the triceritops are two of the deluxe figures available in the Beast Wars Neo line, they have fairly complex transformations, and like Big Convoy, are quite poseable. Longrack even has a fair amount of leg poseability in beast mode, and cool gimics including a spring loaded grapling hook and a tongue that causes his eyes to move when you press it in. Guiledart is my least favorite, his poseability in robot mode is hindered by his beast mode kibble, but on the plus side, he has a funky "trap" mode where he plays dead, with "fake" bloody guts and ribs exposed. Like Big Convoy and Magmatron, Longrack and Guiledart have many small parts and would represent a choking hazard for small children.
