Forested Wetlands (61)

From Anderson et al. (1976):
Forested Wetlands are wetlands dominated by woody vegetation. Forested Wetland includes seasonally flooded bottomland hardwoods, mangrove swamps, shrub swamps, and wooded swamps including those around bogs. Because Forested Wetlands can be detected and mapped by the use of seasonal (winter/summer) imagery, and because delineation of Forested Wetlands is needed for many environmental planning activities, they are separated from other categories of Forest Land.

Forested wetlands are dominated by woody vegetation such as deciduous and coniferous trees. In the NAIP imagery, these areas have a very coarse texture and a homogenous light green color with intermittent dark areas from the shade of the canopy. These wetlands are medium to dark gray in the VMP orthos where there are concentrations of deciduous trees during leaf-off and black in areas that are dominated by coniferous trees. The VMP orthos also have a coarse texture. The proper identification of forested wetlands may require a cross reference of a hydric soils layer or the Vermont Significant Wetlands Inventory.
