Course Description

Sex, drugs, and rock and roll! Yes, the Sixties were famous (or infamous) for them, and this course gives them the attention they deserve. But the Sixties were much more: a time of war and military "interventions," high idealism and political commitment, bitter confrontations, tragic assassinations, and dark conspiracies. Whether you were a child of the Sixties or not, join us for a multimedia, multidisciplinary exploration of this important moment in history which continues to shape our lives today.
    Enrollment Limit: 20.

REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADE:
  • 25% -- Each student will keep a journal* with thoughtful comments about the events in class (lectures, movies, guest speakers, etc.) and about the readings. Minimum: three pages of journal writing per week.
We realize that there are a lot of books. So how should you approach them? Please read and think carefully about everything assigned in Bloom and Breines. On the other hand, while we do not expect you to read everything in every one of the other books, we do expect you at least to skim each book, read a few sections that appeal to you, and be able to summarize and discuss critically the main points of the book. We will be collecting and checking your journal periodically for evidence that you have followed these instructions.
  • 50% -- Students will form into small "affinity groups" and explore a specific topic about the Sixties in depth. Then, toward the end of the semester you will jointly make a presentation, in a form or forms of your choice (talk, slides, music, theatre, dance, or whatever), to the rest of the class. Each student will be required to turn in a short report (2 to 3 pages) on what your affinity group did and what your personal role was.
  • 25% -- Class attendance and participation. An attendance sheet will be circulated each night. If you have to be absent for any reason, please contact one of us ahead of time, if you can, and make arrangements for catching up with the work you miss. Please do not leave class early unless you have spoken with one of us.
    * For a good reference on how to keep a journal in a history class, we recommend "Journal Writing in History" by Toby Fulwiler in Writer's Guide: History by two UVM profs, Henry J. Steffens and Mary Jane Dickinson (D.C. Heath, 1987), pp 17-32. It's available in the bookstore and the library.
