Welcome Aboard! If you are captivated , as I am, by the best-selling novels of Patrick O’Brian or C.S. Forester or other tales from the classic age of sailing ships or you just want to know more about what life was like on the billowing main during this time period, this mini-course may be for you. In recent years, skilled practitioners of the New Social History like Marcus Rediker, Peter Linebaugh and Lisa Norling have given us fresh insights into the lives of ordinary sailors (not all of whom were necessarily male) and their wives and girlfriends awaiting them on shore. And they have helped us gain an appreciation for the more egalitarian alternative societies and sexual countercultures created by the hard-fighting buccaneers who sailed under the Jolly Roger. We will sample pieces of these new historical works, as well as use movies and music, to recreate this world we have lost.
    Enrollment Limit: 15.

COURSE TEXTS:
There is nothing extra to purchase. All reading are available on the Web. However, you must have access to a decent and reliable Internet connection.

COMMUNICATING WITH THE PROF:
In most ordinary circumstances, please use WebCT's own built-in email system (not my UVM email address) to communicate with me. You should get into the habit of checking it (and the calendar section) every time you login to see if there is anything new. If there are any changes or updates to the course, all announcements will be made via both the WebCT email system and the calendar. I will be checking the email myself at least once every day between 8 and 9 a.m. (and probably more often) and trying to get right back to you. If something comes up and you would like to speak directly to me, please try calling in the evening hours. Twice a week, I will announce several hours when I'm definitely going to be at the computer and telephone for "office hours".

REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADE:
  • 75% -- Regular and Lively Participation in our online Discussion Board, "Sailor Talk". Each day you will read the short online lecture or lectures and follow the "What To Do" links. Then you will proceed straightaway to "Sailor Talk" and write several paragraphs minimum about what you have learned and discuss it asynchronously with the instructor and other students. There will also be two weekend movies for you to watch and discuss. For models of what to write about and how to do it well, click here.
  • 25% -- Final Integrative Essay (5 to 6 pp.).

Lateness Policy: Those who try to submit work late, without the captain's permission, will be forced to scrub the decks or, in the worse case, to walk the plank (i.e., get a flunking grade).
