Work at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in the Elder Life Program (of 3 years) -- working on my Certificate in Gerontology. I have volunteers doing a lot of reminiscence with hospitalized patients and we have been taping and/or writing up their stories. We have done a timeline of the 20th century -- 10 panels by each decade with just highlights.
I have lots of family memorabilia (closet full) in boxes in closets and several people of the generation ahead of me left, so want to use this project/time to get a head start on that. I have kept a journal for 20 years, and appreciate life stories.
Will probably need some help limiting this project for the term -- since I have so much materials and a few people left on each side whom I want to contact for now and since I also am very busy at work, and training for a marathon Jan 1st in New Zealand.
I also speak French fairly fluently.

I was born and raised in rural, segregated North Carolina in what I thought were
my formative years. I lived most of my early years in Scotland Neck (yes, there
really is such a place), N.C.
I have lived in Vermont since 1967 when I came to attend the funeral of a cousin
and decided to stay. My mother was originally from Winooski, Vermont. I began
hearing rumors of my mother's paternal side being African-American. My quest to
prove/disprove this rumor has taken me on a long journey through history and my
genealogy.
I love this class because we study not only genealogy but family dynamics and
history and they are all so entertwined.
I have worked as staff at the University of Vermont since 1989. Originally I
came to UVM for tuition remission for my children. I have one daughter
graduated with a BS in Medical Technology currently working in Pathology here at
UVM and another daughter that is a senior Art major here at UVM and working
weekends in the Telecommunications Department.
Now it is my turn to try for a degree. I haven't made up my mind yet what I'd
like to major in but I'm leaning toward some area of History.

I am interested in hopefully learning about my biological Mother's background and ancestry. I believe that my biological grandmother is from Ireland. However, as I am adopted and having been born in Canada, I realize this may be very difficult informaiton to come by.
My adopted mother's family, also Canadian, is originally from Scotland, so I could also try to research that side of the family.
My adopted father's family I know nothing about, except I believe they are originally from Scotland, Wales or England.
I presently live in Underhill with my husband, Bryan, and my three children, Trevor Wales (16), Colin Wales (15) and Keny Wales (14).

I have been working on genealogy of my family for 20 years or more. I have always been interested in history and this is a way that I can make it more personal. I am to the point in my genealogy research where I want to know why people did what they did. Why they moved from one place to another. How did they live? What jobs did they have? Was there an epidemic at the time when there were a lot of family deaths recorded?
I have research my family tree quite extensively, including French Canadian.

Christine Remsen

Looking for:
info on Ramsay Clan of Scotland and info on Bond family of Needham, Massachusetts
|
|
My name is Christine Remsen and I'm from Massachusetts. I'm 24 yrs. old and a former student at UVM. I started here in '93 and completed 3 yrs. of school. I decided to take some time off and worked for a while. Last year I had the opportunity to teach english in China and just returned about a month ago. I only have a year left in school so I figured there's no better time than the present!
I decided to take this class because I don't know much about my family history and I believe we have a lot to learn from our ancestors. My whole family is pretty excited for me to pass on everything I discover.
My grandmother and I were watching the movie "Braveheart" one day and the character of Robert the Bruce came on and she said, "Oh, did you know he's our ancestor?" People on that side of the family have always told me that was true but no one can back it up with information. So, I want to find out if this is ture, or if everyone was just passing on what they have heard! Also, my father is adopted, so I would like to find out a little about his family. However, all he knows is the last name of his biological mother.
So, I'm pretty excited about this class and expect to learn a lot.

Looking for:
William Bradford of Barre, Vermont or Massachusetts
|
|
My name is Cathy Walker and I work in Continuing Education. I was so excited to see your class being offered. I have been researching my genealogy since 1991. I researched not only names but also pictures so that I could put a name with a face. I was researching extensively my Grandmother Bradford's history because she always told me that we were related to William Bradford who came over on the Mayflower. I am about 100 years shy of that goal of connecting our families together. I was hoping that this class could give me the knowledge to get my answers.
I have spoken to a 5th grade class about my genealogy research and always find one student who is interested. I would like to be a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Abby Wiggin
awiggin@zoo.uvm.edu
|
My name is Abby Wiggin. I'm a senior at UVM. This is my last semester in a 4 1/2 year plan. I was raised in Woodstock, Vermont -- left for a year when I was 18 -- then had to come back -- I missed it so much. So I have been in Burlington for about 4 years -- working and attending school and loving all of it. My brother is in town and parents only about an hour south. So all this leads to me wanting to take this course. I keep myself in Vermont not only for me, but because my family has close ties here. Vermont has been home for over 1000 years and looks like it will continue -- with myself and my brother, new wife and baby to arrive in January expecting to stay. And recently my parents have started renovating the family farm house in Norwich, VT -- old, old, old pictures are emerging and the closeness to my roots is growing. So, like my mom has always told me to do, I will attempt to learn about my genealogy -- I've seen the pcitures, opened the old journals -- read the stories -- now I will construct my own tree.
