Spring at last: The UVM Sugar On Snow Party

Friday, April 21st, 2006

sugar on snow During a short trip to the bookstore today, I stumbled into, and through, the annual UVM Sugar on Snow Party. In addition to the cold, sweet, chewy treats (and accompanying pickles!) served up in the warm spring sun, the local folk group Atlantic Crossing served up their own treat in the form of a live show. The Solar Bus was also there. I’ve put up a set of photos of the event on Flickr for your viewing pleasure.

Highlights from the Spring 2006 UVM IT News

Wednesday, April 19th, 2006

The latest IT Newsletter is out, and with it comes a nice article on managing your email. Dealing with spam, and automatic sorting (i.e. of list traffic) is covered, among other useful ideas (oops, this was an older article, apparently). In the “Technology Corner” section of this issue is one of my favorite columns, the “Tech profile”, which features interviews of IT professionals from around campus. Kudos to Stef Ploof for putting together another great issue.

Instant RSS

Wednesday, April 19th, 2006

Sabifoo is a tool that lets you create an rss feed (and a web page) from your instant message client. Essentially it’s a “robot” that publishes whatever you send to it on a web page/feed. Some cool additions to this service would be private feeds, multiple person chat capability (i.e. invite the sabifoo bot to a chat to record and publish an interview chat between two people), and enclosures for links to media and file transfers. Akismet spam protection in Movable Type

Spam protection in Movable Type just got a whole lot easier. If it works as well as it does in wordpress, it’ll make dealing with spam in MT a breeze. (Via Photo Matt.)

Using Flickr for collaborative class projects

Tuesday, April 11th, 2006

During our recent colleague tea session on web tools in the classroom, we talked about ideas for using images on the web in the classroom. Image repositories were discussed. Scott McLaughlin from Archeology (and History, and Education), mentioned that some of his class projects include field work such as taking pictures and creating rubbings of gravestones. This made me think of the online photo sharing service Flickr as a possible image collection and organization tool. Here are some of my thoughts on how this might work, the benefits and possible pitfalls that might be involved in such an endeavor.

Friends in the news

Friday, April 7th, 2006

Just a quick note - as I glanced at the front page of the Burlington Free Press today, I thought I saw a friendly face, and had to look closer. Indeed, on page one was a great shot of Charlie in action in the classroom. You can read the article and see the photos online on the BFP’s site.

Yar, it’s the CTL Blog!

Wednesday, April 5th, 2006

Okay, so I haven’t used a pirate-themed title here in a while. Now that that’s out of my system, I just wanted to make a quick note about the brand new CTL blog. Some of the stuff we’ll be posting over there include materials from workshops, as well as links and discussions of tools and resources we come across. You can find out a little more about it in the welcome post. To get your daily dose of the “lighter” side of CTL served up piping hot, you can also subscribe to the main feed as well as comment feeds in your favorite reader. Enjoy!
