Quest:
“Gone
to the Birds” – Vermont State
Bird
1.)
Your
Challenge:
A.)
Introduction:
The governor
of Vermont, Jim Douglas, has decided to change the state bird. He
has
created a competition in which fourth grade students throughout the
state are
asked to nominate different birds. The class that wins the competition
will be
invited to meet the governor and join him in a celebration
initiating the
new state bird.
In
order for a bird to be selected it must meet certain
requirements. It cannot be the state bird of any other New
England State,
and it must stay in the state throughout the winter.
B.)
The
Challenge:
Your teacher has
decided that
each student in the class will work with a small group to research and
nominate
a bird. Each group must find out as
much information as they can about the bird they choose.
Some information to look for would be the
bird’s habitat, what it eats, and any other interesting facts that make
it
stand out. Then the group must create a poster that illustrates the
bird and
it’s habitat. The group must also
include a paper describing why the bird deserves to be Vermont’s new
state
bird.
There are a few
steps that you
need to take before selecting a bird to nominate.
1.)
Research
and find out what Vermont’s current state bird is.
2.)
Find
out the other state birds in New England.
3.)
Find
out what birds are native to Vermont.
4.)
Choose
a bird and find out everything you can about it!
