Lets talk HISTORY!
A brief introduction to the Long Trail

The Long Trail was started by members of the Green Mountain Club in the year 1910.  This trail was built "to make the mountains of Vermont play a larger part in the life of the people". -Mission statement of the Green Mountain Club  The Trail runs from the Massachusetts-Vermont line up to the Canadian border.   In the year 1930 the trail was finished and is the oldest long-distance trail in the United States.  This trail follows the main ridge of the Green Mountains and crosses Vermont's highest peaks with 272 miles of footpaths, 175 miles of side trails, and seventy different campsites.   The trail offers endless hiking opportunities for day hikers, weekend overnight hikers, and people who are looking to backpack for an extended amount of time.  If you are ready, I invite you to join me on the "footpath in the wilderness".

Are you ready???
Here's your challenge
You and a friend will be spending your summer break traveling the Long Trail.  Before traveling you must plan your trip and be sure everything is prepared for your months in the wilderness.  Think about what you will pack, what route you will travel, where you will sleep, and safety along the way.  You may also want to think about the weather you will encounter, animals to be aware of along the way, and when will be the best time to travel.  Once you feel ready to hike the trail, get out your bug spray and start treckin'!!
