FINDING THE WAY TO FREEDOM: A Journey on the Underground Railroad 4th grade |
Introduction: You have been taken back in time, all the way back to the 1850's! Suddenly, you find yourself in the deep south, surrounded by plantations and slave owners. A few of the slaves from the neighboring plantation heard you were from up North! They want you to help them make their way along the Underground Railroad. Before you can help them out, though, you must learn more about it! |
Challenge: These slaves are already risking their lives and so you must be very careful to ensure their safety. You don't want to lead them in the wrong direction or send them to a house that is not "safe". So before you begin your journey, please complete the following: 1. Map out the route you would take from Charleston, South Carolina to Canada. Your teacher will provide you with a map of the U.S. on which to draw this route. 2. Find out what signals meant that a house was "safe" and part of the Underground Railroad. 3. Figure out who "Moses" is. What was her job? Will she be able to help you? 4. Find out when is the best time to start your journey North. |
