Erosion Threatens Your Community!!!!

4th and 5th graders: Professor Keepsoil needs your help…

Students: Your community is very excited about the new shopping center to be put up in the middle of town. Mayor Washout keeps talking about all the stores and food places it will offer. It seems as though everyone would rather listen to him than to Professor Keepsoil who insists that the tearing down of trees and the paving over of the soil will ruin the town because of the erosion it will cause.

Your Task: Make Professor Keepsoil a poster that can be displayed around town that will help him reach the community with his points about the affects of erosion. Be sure to include what causes erosion, especially when trees are removed and soil is taken away. Also include what affects erosion might have on the town. Professor Keepsoil is having trouble getting people to listen to him so make sure your poster stands out.

A good place to start your thinking about erosion is to take notes on the following questions:

  • What is erosion?
  • What are contributing factors in erosion?
  • What are some effects of erosion?
  • Can erosion be prevented and if it can, how?

Once you answer these you will be an expert on erosion and prepared to inform your community. Erosion affects different types of communities in different ways. Feel free to be creative in what your community is like (e.g. mountainous, desert, swamp, etc.) Just make sure the points you make on your poster are relevant to the community you imagine you are addressing.

These sites will help you find out more about erosion:

http://www.botany.uwc.ac.za/Envfacts/facts/erosion.htm  Soil Erosion- this site talks about the general idea of erosion. It is a great place to start your journey and build a background of knowledge. It also includes some interesting and striking facts you might want to use in your poster as attention getters.

http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/feature/education/squirm/skQstns.html NRCS: Worm Your Way Through These Questions- A worm answers several questions about soil.  Look around here for questions  specifically aimed at soil erosion.

http://whyfiles.org/107flood/3.html Fewer Trees = More Floods?  Flood of Evidence – Use this site to find out about how floods can happen especially if your community is near a river.  Also though learn about the relationship deforestation has on floods.

http://www.fi.edu/earth/water.html Earthforce in the water- Water shapes the earth in many ways.  Natural disasters show how this happens at a rapid rate.  Look to this site to learn about floods, avalanches, and tsunamis.  Pay specific attention to some of the contributing factors behind these disasters and what erosion looks like and causes following one.  Make sure they are relevant to your community.

Use these key words in a search engine if you can’t find what you need or want to explore more: erosion control, earth moving activity, soil erosion, flooding, also search erosion and (your type of community) e.g., coastal erosion

Your poster should clearly state your beliefs on the new shopping center and how it might contribute to erosion and what this will mean for the welfare of your town. Treat this issue as though it is one the community will be voting on. Use persuasive language. Good luck.
