Introduction:

Towards the end of the 19th century, scientists began to discover that atoms didn’t only exist in solids. There were other forms of matter such as liquids and gasses.  Matter exists everywhere!

Mission:  Step back into time, for you are a scientist of the 19th century.  You have heard of the term “ matter”, but you are curious to find out how matter can take on different forms.

Your Task:  Create a scientific journal where you record different forms of matter in your daily life.  You want to include pictures of what atoms look like when they are in different states.  Then, create a newspaper article announcing your discovery.  The states of matter were very new to the people during the 19th century. It is your job to write a convincing article describing your findings. Use the worksheet given by your teacher to complete the newspaper article.  Questions to keep in mind are

®What is matter?

®How do we know it exists?

®What are the different states of matter?

®If you were to look under a microscope, what

would the atoms look like in each state of

  matter?
