Oceans

If you look down at our planet from outer space, most of what you see is water; 71% of the planet’s surface is covered by ocean and it is because of this that the earth is sometimes called the “water planet.”

When you go to the beach, don’t you ever just stare at the ocean wondering where does it actually begin and where does it end? I know that I do.

YOUR CHALLENGE

You and your family decided to go to the beach for the day like you usually do in the summer. However, today is a very special day because you are learning how to surf! You get on your board and a wave knocks you off. Like a determined trooper, you get back on your surfboard.  Again, another wave knocks you off.  After an hour, you decide to call it a day. You look back at the water and wonder…

1.               From where did the salt in the ocean come from?

2.             Can we drink ocean water?

3.             How much is there?

4.             What makes the waves in the ocean big and small?

5.             Why do we have to conserve water if there is so much of it?
