Saving the Arthropods in the Ocean
Grade: 5
Topic: Arthropods

 Your Challenge:

Introduction:     There has just been a terrible accident!  There was a chemical spill off the coast of Massachusetts and into the Atlantic Ocean.  This chemical spill is endangering the Ocean's environment and everything living in it, because it is becoming very polluted.  This particular type of chemical that has just spilled into the Ocean is especially harmful to ARTHROPODS.  Luckily, you are an Oceanographer, someone who studies the Ocean and knows a lot about it.  It is your job to identify the arthropods that live in the Ocean, so that you can help to save them from the horrible chemicals that are polluting their environment.  In order to do this, you must know what an arthropod is!

It is your job to help save the arthropods that live in the Ocean.  Before you do this, you need to know what an arthropod is, and what types of arthropods live in the Ocean.  First, you need to do some research and list three types of arthropods.  Then, you need to name the characteristics of the arthropods that live in the Ocean, and give examples of specific types of arthropods that live in the Ocean.  Once you know what types of arthropods live in the Ocean, you can begin to save them from the chemicals.  You will need to write a report based on all of the information you have researched using the internet.  Below is a list of everything that needs to go into your report:

1.  What is an arthropod?  What are the three types of arthropods?
  2.  What are the characteristics of arthropods that live in the Ocean?
3.  List five (5) names of specific arthropods that live in the Ocean.
