Introduction: Miss Emily has three new students in her class.  Kami is from Japan, Adil from India and Raul from Mexico.  Since they are new to our class, I want to make sure that they have a chance to tell us about their family and country's holidays and traditions.  Kami has told me about a children's day that is celebrated every year in her country.  They celebrate boys in May and girls in March.  Each celebration has different traditions and customs.  Kami also told me about their celebration of nature and their "Golden Week."  Can you imagine a whole week off just to celebrate holidays?!  Adil had a chance to tell me about some of the traditions that he was a part of in India.  The festival of lights is celebrated in October or November and lasts about five days.  Did you find out why it is celebrated across two months?  The colors of India is celebrated in the spring.  What was your favorite legend and recipe?  Adil told me about Janamashtami which is a celebration of Lord Krishna.  Why else is it celebrated?  Finally, Raul talked to me about his traditions in Mexico.  I know Americans celebrate Cinco de Mayo, but why do Mexicans celebrate this holiday?  He also told me about All Saints day which is similar to which one of our celebrations.  Finally, Raul told me about Mexico's Independence Day.  How is it similar or different from out Independence Day?

Challenge: Take a look at the websites I have listed below.  Answer the questions that have asked you in the above paragraph.  I want you to think about how Kami, Adil and Raul's holiday's are similar and different to our traditions and holidays in the United States.  When you have looked through all of the information, I want you to pick a holiday that interested you the most.  Make a plan of how you might bring this holiday into our classroom for one of the new students as a way to welcome them.  Think about what tools and materials you might need.  Do you want to include food?  Will you invite parents and families.  Once your plan is completed I will look over it and we will share it with the class.  Maybe we will be able to celebrate some of these holidays throughout the year!
