Boys and girls you have the world at your fingertips and it's time to explore.  But where do we begin?  Let's start by reviewing what we already know.  We know that there are 3 basic classes of rocks: sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous.  So there no other types of rocks?  And what about minerals?  Are they rocks?

I challenge you to find out what exactly a mineral is.  Is it a rock or is it something completely different?  Using the links below you will need to do the following:


  1. Discover the difference between rocks and minerals
  2. Learn about words to describe minerals
  3. Find your favorite mineral and teach us about it

  1. Read about the difference between rocks and minerals.
  2. Using the chart provided on page 1, in your journey packet list the differences and similarities.

  1. Learn about different words to describe minerals colour and luster.
  2. On page 2, in your journey packet you will find a definition of colour and luster.  There is space provided to write down words to describe colour and luster.

  1. Look at the pictures of minerals.
  2. To learn more about a mineral click on the picture using your mouse.
  3. When you have found a mineral that interests you read through the information.
  4. To read the information using the mouse you will need to move the bar on the right side of the page down or up.
  5. On page 3, in your journey packet record the following information: describe it using the vocabulary from above, name, sources, uses, substitutes, and draw a picture and color it.  If time allows choose another.
Lastly, you will need to find another student in your class and tell them about your findings and hand in your material to your teacher.
