Weather Watc
hers: Project Safe
Safety in Natural Disasters

Grades: K-1
Lightning

Welcome, Weather Watcher!  Dr. Forcast needs your help!  She spent the summer traveling all over the world in her special Weather Watcher hot air balloon so that she can observe natural disasters up close.  She has seen hurricanes, tornadoes, , floods, earthquakes, thunderstorms, and tsunamis and has now returned to her Weather Lab in South Burlington for the winter.  She thinks that it is important for people to understand natural disasters and how to be safe if one occurs.

The Challenge: Dr. Forcast has asked you to help her make posters to put in schools all across the world telling kids just like you how to be safe during a natural disaster.  It is important that you know a lot about the natural disaster you are writing about so that you can really help your friends be safe.  Because your whole class is helping Dr. Forcast with her project, she wants you to pick one of the natural disasters that she has seen, either HURRICANE, TORNADO, FLOOD, EARTHQUAKE, THUNDERSTORM, or TSUNAMI, and become an expert on it by looking at pictures and reading information from the websites she listed below.  If you need help reading some of the information, ask a teacher or your classmates for help!

After you know all about your natural disaster, Weather Watcher, Dr. Forcast would like you to put together a poster.  The poster should have 3 parts: a picture of what the natural disaster looks like, a sentence describing what the natural disaster is and what it does, and a sentence describing how you think people could stay safe during the natural disaster.  If you need help writing your ideas, don't forget to ask a teacher in your classroom for some help!

The Journey:  Dr. Forcast found some helpful websites for you to look at and study so that you can become an expert on natural disasters.  Make sure you look at the pictures and read some information so that you know all about the natural disaster you chose and can make decisions about safety rules.  Please have fun and explore these websites!
