TIMING IS EVERYTHING!!

FOSSILS AND WHEN THEY DEVELOPED

A Web quest for 4th/5th graders

HELP!!!!

There’s been a robbery!!  The local museum is missing all of its fossils and the beautiful timeline of what time periods the fossils came from, which was made by last year’s fifth grade class.  The police have been able to find the robbers, but can only get the fossils and the timeline back if you can piece back together where the fossils are to be placed next to the timeline.  Hurry time is running out!!

YOUR CHALLENGE:

Do research on the Internet and use the websites given to you to learn about different fossils and different time periods when these fossils developed.  You want to find out when certain living creatures lived and how geologists classify these fossils.  When you have gathered enough information create a timeline on a large piece of paper with either pictures of fossils
representing each time period or with the help of your teacher create your own fossils in plaster of pares and place them next to the timeline.  You want to show clearly what types of living things lived in what time period so that the robbers will give back the real fossils!!

TO GET STARTED:

What does a timeline for fossils look like?

When did creatures we see in fossils live?

     Where did they come from?

Key Words you can use on Yahooligans:      “Fossils”   “Geology”
