The
Big Panda Challenge
Introduction
We
are going to practice
recognizing and finding all the letters in the alphabet. Along the way,
you
might learn something new about the giant panda!
Task:
First,
you need to get a piece of
paper and and a pencil. Write the whole alphabet. If you can't
remember
how to make all the letters, find a teacher helper.
Read
the following story, or have a
grown-up read it to you. When you see a big orange letter, find it in
your
alphabet and circle it. By the end of the story, ALL your alphabet
letters
should be circled.
The
Story:
Giant
pandas are black and white.
Most
pandas live Far away, in
China. But, some Zoos in the United States have pandas. Have
You ever seen a panda in a zoo? MieXiang (pronounced
may-SHONG) lives at the National Zoo in Washington DC.
When
pandas are born, they are the
same size as a Stick of butter -- that's Really small!
Baby
pandas are not quiet, but
they are very cute! 
They
depend on the mommy panda for
everything. Mommy pandas give
birth in a den
and stay with their newborn cub for up to ten days. The mommy panda
must keep
the baby panda warm, so she holds it almost constantly.
That
is a hard Job!
When
they are adults, pandas eat
mostly bamboo , 
which
they can hold onto because
of a large bone in their wrists. Grown
pandas
can weigh over
two hundred pounds!
