Experiencing Earthquakes

Introduction:

You are visiting your grandparents in San Francisco during spring break.  You are out walking around the city with your grandmother, when all of a sudden, the ground starts shaking. What is happening? Why?

The Challenge:

Write about your earthquake experience in your science journal. What did you see? How did it feel? What kind of noises did you hear?  Was everyone okay?

Now list a few safety precautions that can be taken the next time an earthquake hits. You never know when it could happen again!!!!

1. What do you do if you are outside when the earthquake hits? How about if you are inside?

2. What kinds of things can your grandparents do to their house so that no one is hurt and little damage is done?

3. What was happening to the earth during the earthquake you experienced?

4. Where do earthquakes usually occur and why?
