Mauna Loa Volcano

Ms. Gilfoil’s 4th Grade

You and the rest of Ms. Gilfoil’s class are on a field trip to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in Hawaii.  Your class is being taken through a tour on a volcano when you wander off and all of a sudden you find that you are all alone.  As you try to find the rest of your class you slip on some rocks and you end up falling into the volcano Mauna Loa.  You land on a small cliff inside but you notice that it is getting hotter and hotter.  The volcano is about to erupt…

Your Challenge

In order to save yourself and the rest of your unsuspecting classmates you must learn as much information about the Mauna Loa volcano.  Once you have successfully learned the correct information about the Mauna Loa volcano it will stop the eruption from occurring and you will be able to get out of the volcano.  On a separate piece of paper you need to record the answers to the following information in order to save yourself and your classmates.

1.     When was the last eruption from the Mauna Loa?

2.     How big is the Mauna Loa volcano?

3.     What type of volcano is the Mauna Loa?

4.     What is the climate like on the Mauna Loa?

5.     Name two vegetation zones on Mauna Loa and the plants that grow at each zone.

6.     What are four key factors for lava-flow direction?
