8 Colchester Avenue
The UVM Outing Club, founded in 1932, provides the UVM community
not only with wilderness trips for all the seasons, as well as backcountry
rental equipment and technical skill instruction.
[1]
The structure first appeared in 1906, as a stable, and continued as such until
1926 when it becomes a private garage.
[2]
In 1942, it appeared on a Sanborn map marked as a lab with an automobile in the
basement.
[3]
In 1960, the structure, while still marked as a lab, was shown as having
expanded to its current size.
[4]
A 1978 map
showed the structure as being a lab, yet in 1976, the Outing Club moved in so
as to house the club’s library, offices, equipment, and workshops.
[5]
It is unclear what the exact situation was at that time, but perhaps the two
were sharing the space. Currently, the Outing Club remains at its 1976
location, 8 Colchester Avenue.
