Fall l996, M 11:15-12:15; W 11:15-12:45
Professor K. Trainor

Requirements:

Students are expected to attend class regularly, to read the assigned texts thoroughly and critically, and to participate in class discussions. Written assignments will include a journal, two short papers, and a take-home final exam. The journal assignment is fulfilled by making two entries each week in response to the readings and/or class discussion, and can be kept either in a traditional written form or by participating in the e-mail discussion list that will be set up for the course. The two papers, each about five pages in length (double-spaced with one-inch margins), will require you to integrate material covered in class with research in the library and/or on the internet and viewing/listening to music, art, dance, or ritual. There will be two performances of Indian classical music during the course of the semester (see below for dates), and students are expected to attend at least one of these and write a reflection in their journals or on the e-mail discussion list. The various assignments count toward your final grade as follows: participation and journal-30%; two papers-20% each; final exam-30%. Students must submit all required work (including the journal) in a timely fashion in order to pass the course.

It is the responsibility of all students enrolled in this course to be aware of and in compliance with the university's regulations regarding academic honesty as stated in The Cat's Tale. If you have any questions about these regulations, you should speak to the instructor for further clarification. Ignorance will not be considered a legitimate excuse for infringement of these regulations. Violations of the standards of academic honesty will be prosecuted.
