ABOUT GROWING VERMONT
Growing Vermont is a student run store that offers a variety of locally designed goods created by small-scale, start-up entrepreneurs in the State of Vermont. Our mission is to educate the community about the positive impacts of buying local while building awareness of the availability of Vermont products and businesses. We continually strive to build a strong community bond between Growing Vermont, small business and the larger Vermont community.
Growing Vermont aims to contribute to sustainable, community-based economic development in the state of Vermont through educational partnerships between UVM students and Vermont entrepreneurs.
In order to fulfill the store's mission the Growing Vermont team seeks to accomplish the following goals:
- Educate the campus community about the positive impacts of buying local.
- Build awareness of the availability of Vermont products and businesses.
- Provide a retail incubator space where students collaborate with Vermont entrepreneurs to research optimal marketing and business-planning strategies.
- Sustain a "real-world laboratory" where UVM students apply their academic lessons in entrepreneurship to solve business problems.
- Contribute to sustainable community development through entrepreneurship training.
Growing Vermont aims to meet it's goals and mission statement through several strategies:
Serve as a business incubator:
Growing Vermont invites entrepreneurs to use our retail location as a means to bring their business idea to fruition. Students and vendors work together to determine how to best present, promote and publicize the product. Through rotating partnerships, the campus community learns about new businesses and products throughout Vermont.
By working with Growing Vermont our partner-vendors have access to the variety of services and networks in the UVM community. Additionally, Growing Vermont provides opportunities for partner vendors to collaborate and develop research projects with students.
Operate an applied-learning laboratory for aspiring entrepreneurs and small business owners:
As a student-run store, UVM students from various departments apply their interest in small business development in a hands-on setting. Students can participate through internships, work-study, service learning and seminar courses and have the opportunity to experience the responsibilities and challenges of running a small business.
This learning laboratory also enables aspiring student-entrepreneurs to work with Vermont's new businesses to develop practical job skills. By participating in Growing Vermont, students gain unique qualifications and connections, improving future career opportunities.
