Deforestation can also change the climate in a state. Trees take carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air and replace it with oxygen through a process called photosynthesis. When trees are cut down carbon dioxide begins to build up in the air.

stop and think

What happens when CO2 and other greenhouse gases
 build up in the air?

When the climate changes in a state some kinds of plants don’t grow as well. Lots of Vermonters have jobs that depend on the plants they grow.

stop and think

What kind of crops do Vermont farmers raise that might
not grow as well if the climate changed?                                       www.agclassroom.org/
