The Mass Spectrometry Core Laboratory (MSCL) under the direction of Dwight Matthews, Ph.D., is located in the General Clinical Research Center. The MSCL provides specialized and expensive analytical instrumentation specifically to support clinical investigation. The primary focus of the MSCL is directed toward metabolic studies, where stable isotopes are used in determining in vivo kinetics and for quantitation of metabolite levels. The MSCL provides both the instrumentation and the experienced staff for the isotope ratio mass spectrometric (IRMS) and gas chromatographic mass spectrometric (GCMS) measurement of a full range of metabolic tracers. The facility receives samples from users, prepares the samples for analysis, performs the requested analyses by IRMS or GCMS, and returns a report of the results to users. Any user wishing to learn these techniques can bring his/her samples to the facility and receive practical training. Assistance is also offered to investigators in the planning their metabolic studies using stable isotope tracers. Literature citations of articles relevant to planned studies can also be provided.
