The Field Naturalist Program
Giving Field Naturalists the tools they need to move the world
Winter Ecology and Fluff Science
Every winter for the past 20 years, students from the Field Naturalist and Ecological Planning Programs have braved the wilds of Maine with naturalist par excellence Bernd Heinrich to gather insight into the world he has written so eloquently about in his books (e.g. Winter World, In a Patch of Fireweed, and A Year in the Maine Woods, among others).
Over the course of the week (usually in early January), graduate students design and conduct experiments to better understand what it means to adapt to a winter landscape. Returning to the comforts of electricity and a laptop, students then analyze and write up their results. The highly esteemed Fluff Science Journal is the product of tireless days and long winter nights of work.Volumes of Fluff Science will be available to download in the near future
