Aki Inomata:
Why Not Hand Over a 'Shelter' to Hermit Crabs?

August 30, 2011 - December 16, 2011
New Media Niche, Fleming Lobby

Complementary to Andrew Raftery's exploration of house hunting in her suite of prints, Open House, on display this fall at the Fleming, Tokyo-based video artist Aki Inomata crafts a variety of shelters for hermit crabs to inhabit in her video, Why Not Hand Over a 'Shelter' to Hermit Crabs? Some of these shelters refer to architecture in faraway places that the artist herself yearns to explore, others reference objects such as flowers or moose antlers. Through this process, the hermit crabs become Inomata's avatar, 'trying on' foreign cities or identities that the artist has seen or witnessed, but never visited or inhabited.
