First Year Working Group
The working group on first year writing, chaired by Professor Nancy Welch (English), has 15 members from across campus (11 faculty members, 2 graduate teaching assistants, and 2 undergraduate writing tutors). The group has secured commitments from six instructors and one graduate teaching assistant teaching four TAP seminars, four Honors College seminars, and four English 1 sections, to teach versions of those courses with activities and assignments emphasizing four foundational writing and information literacy goals. The working group has already refined a set of outcomes about writing and information literacy development at a foundational level—what new college students need to learn and do in order to make a successful transition to higher education. The group will have a curriculum planning session in May to work on their courses. In Fall 2012, the group will continue to reflect on their experiences, and in Spring 2013, the group will review samples of student work to evaluate and report back to the Faculty Senate about the potential for these three different first-year courses to work toward some shared goals. Financial support from the Provost’s Office has made this group’s work possible.
