New Employee Training

New employees must complete online training when hired, before being exposed to hazards in the laboratory, and then attend Scenario Training within 3 months of the start of their employment.

To assure adequate training, new laboratory workers need to:

  • participate in the Environmental Safety training program described above
  • receive specific training on the hazards in their laboratory (you can download a PDF of guidelines for what this training should cover)
  • be supervised to the level deemed necessary by the laboratory supervisor based on their assessment of this individual’s knowledge level, experience and competency.

    As long as these criteria are met, it is the judgment of the laboratory supervisor to decide whether new workers can participate in laboratory work. Questions about this can be directed to Environmental Safety staff at esf@uvm.edu
