Environmental Safety Supplies and Services available to UVM Laboratories

This document is an overview of supplies and services provided by UVM Environmental Safety (ES).

If you are new to UVM, a new Chemical Safety Officer, or have any questions about safety or compliance in your laboratory or any item listed below please contact us at esf@uvm.edu. We will be happy to schedule a consultation with you to discuss the individual needs of your laboratory in relation to UVM safety guidelines.

Supplies available to purchase

The following supplies are available to UVM laboratories with the cost charged to a budget number:

  • Chemicals and supplies (1 gal amber glass jugs; 5 gal poly pails for waste, sharps containers, non-mercury thermometers, tin funnels) through ChemSource at reduced cost compared to commercial vendors.

  • ChemExchange chemicals at a very low cost ($2/container).

These supplies are available at no charge to UVM laboratories:

  • Environmental Management Plan required laboratory paperwork. Please set up a Laboratory Safety Notebook with these forms and store it in a holder on the back of the main entrance door to the laboratory.

  • Laboratory Self Inspection Cards

  • China marker (grease pencil) for Laboratory Self Inspection Cards

  • Louie pollution prevention sink stickers:
    “This sink drains to Lake Champlain”

  • Emergency Notification Door Sign

  • Labels for chemical storage cabinets: Flammables, Corrosives, Acids, Bases, Oxidizers, Toxics, Chemical Waste Storage Area

  • Labels for chemical containers (usually not needed for manufacturers’ containers): bright orange labels in large and small for hazardous chemicals and light green labels in large and small for non-hazardous chemicals.

  • Eyewash signage (to make eyewash stations easier to find)

  • Flush calendar/log for eyewash and safety shower

  • Chemical spill kit (suitable for all chemical spills less than 1 liter, except hydrofluoric acid or mercury spills)

  • “Spill Kit” sign to increase visibility of spill kit

  • Laboratory Waste Accumulation Container stickers and Laboratory Waste Disposal Tags for chemical waste that is generated

  • Non-mercury laboratory thermometers for exchange for mercury thermometers through the Mercury Thermometer Exchange Program or for purchase through ChemSource.

  • Biowaste boxes and bags for biowaste that is collected for incineration

  • Training videos and PowerPoint files for additional information about laboratory specific hazards

  • Assorted warning signs, for use as needed:

    • “No food, for chemical use only”

    • English/Vietnamese/Bosnian “Do Not Touch” signs for chemical or bio-waste containers that sit on the floor

    • “No Custodial Services Needed”

    • Cold room safety signage
