Looking for Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)?

We recommend that you first try the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety. UVM has a site license for access to this database, which includes over 100,000 MSDS's, updated quarterly.

You can also check your chemical suppliers ’ websites for MSDS information:

VWR: http://www.vwrsp.com/search/index.cgi?tmpl=msds

Airgas:
http://www.airgas.com/content/msds.aspx

The Public Health Agency of Canada has developed MSDS's for a variety of infectious agents. These are available at:
http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/msds-ftss/index.html

General Chemical Safety information:
Prudent Practices in the Laboratory: Handling and Disposal of Chemicals (1995)
from the National Research Council

General Biosafety Information:
Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL) 5th Edition
from the Centers for Disease Control

Note: An MSDS for hazardous materials with proprietary (i.e. trade secret) ingredients is only available from the manufacturer. Please keep a hard copy of the MSDS for these hazardous chemicals in your laboratory. If the material is non-hazardous or lists ‘irritant’ as the only hazard you are not required to keep a copy of the MSDS.

Contact UVM Environmental Safety at esf@uvm.edu for assistance with acquiring or interpreting MSDS's.
