Public Beaches and Rivers

Vermont's rivers, streams, ponds, and lakes constitute a valuable natural resource which benefits residents and visitors.  Violations of the state's bacterial water quality standards can result in beach closings and illnesses in swimmers.  Maintaining a high standard of bacterial water quality in recreational waters is invaluable to human health and the state's recreational tourist industry.  E. coli monitoring data has been summarized by year for state park beaches, and rivers and streams monitored by volunteer citizen groups.
