Beaches and Rivers |
| Vermont's rivers, streams, ponds, and lakes constitute a valuable
natural resource which benefits residents and visitors. Violations
of the state's bacterial water quality standards can result in beach
closings and illnesses in swimmers. Maintaining a high standard of
bacterial water quality in recreational waters is invaluable to human
health and the state's recreational tourist industry. E. coli
monitoring data has been summarized by year for state park beaches, and rivers and
streams monitored by volunteer citizen groups. |

State park beaches are monitored for E. coli by the state of
Vermont. Water samples are processed at the Department of Environmental Conservation Laboratory
in Waterbury, VT. Data has been summarized for 1996-1999. |

Rivers and Streams in
Vermont have been monitored for E. coli by volunteer watershed
associations since the early 1990's. Many of these river monitoring
projects have been organized by River
Watch Network in Montpelier, VT. |
