PURPOSE:  The purpose of this fund is to support conservation and rural development, as well as student research and service learning, in partnership with coffee farming cooperatives and resource-poor farming families in El Salvador. At this time, the fund primarily supports the work of the Association of Organic Coffee Producers of Western El Salvador (ACOES), a recently formed, farmer organization that brings together 29 families of the municipality of Tacuba.

This fund is managed by Dr. Ernesto Mendez, Professor of Agroecology at UVM, his research group and collaborators. One of our key accomplishments was to connect ACOES with Cooperative Coffees in 2007, one of the most progressive coffee importers in North America, and which supports the idea of 'relationship coffee'.  Relationship coffee provides a stable market and support so that producers can be more socially and environmentally sustainable.
