Secondary Education

Thinking about Teaching? Think about Secondary Education!

Yes, it is possible for you at age 17 or 18 to begin preparing to teach high schoolers! You have four years to develop the skills and knowledge you need to become an outstanding teacher.

You need to bring a passion for both teaching and for 12 to 18 year olds, as well as a willingness to work hard. As you know, adolescence is synonymous with change. Adolescents are at once confident and insecure, funny and serious, and very much in need of caring and smart teachers.

The Secondary Education Program at the University of Vermont recognizes that teachers who work with adolescents require a unique set of knowledge and skills. You need to understand and be able to support students to develop an understanding of themselves and the content you are bringing to them. Our focus on the developmental nature and needs of adolescents and our high expectations regarding what you teach and how you convey that information to students will prepare you for this wonderful profession.
