Reading and Language Arts Program

Master of Education:  Reading and Language Arts Program

The purpose of the graduate program in Reading and Language Arts is to enhance and extend the knowledge and expertise of literacy educators.  The mission of this graduate program involves a commitment to five goals:

  • To support and prepare professionals who use meaningful activity and a responsive pedagogy as the core of their instructional program and who view teaching and learning as constructive and interactive;

  • To build upon and extend the knowledge and expertise of in-place professionals, focusing particular attention on addressing the needs of individual students within an inclusive environment;

  • To provide specialized professional development in the area of literacy to Vermont's elementary and secondary teachers through the M.Ed. with Specializations in Reading/Language Arts;

  • To cultivate knowledge, skills, and dispositions required for literacy leaders - building especially on skills of collaborative consultation and reflective practice; and

  • To lay an appropriate scholarly foundation for those wishing to pursue a doctorate.

The program is NCATE and State accredited, for the advanced level of endorsement as Reading Teacher (5440-76).
