The Undergraduate Program in Middle Level Education

Undergrads

Are you passionate about helping kids learn? Are you flexible? Are you a team player? Do you have a sense of humor? Are you knowledgeable about subjects you would like to share with others?

You should become a middle school teacher!

General Overview

Middle Level teachers need to be skilled in at least 2 content areas. As part of this program, students can design a major that combines courses in their areas of interest.

Our class size ranges from 10-30 students per class, creating a learning environment that allows for discussion and project-based learning as opposed to lots of teacher lecturing.  Our small class size presents the opportunity for students and faculty to really get to know each other. We use a cohort model in which students entering the program in the same year take courses together, creating a learning community.

Given the intimate nature of the program, students are not just assigned an advisor they will never meet or take a course with. Instead, the faculty in our program are devoted to helping meet the needs of our students.

As early as the first year, students are given opportunities to visit middle schools and work with young adolescents. This level of involvement with local schools continues to grow throughout the four years in the program.

Students in the Middle Level program are given opportunities to create their own courses of study based on their interests. Endless possibilities include conducting your own research around young adolescents and getting the results published!
