Art Education Program

DEPARTMENT OF ART AND ART HISTORY

ART EDUCATION OVERVIEW

The Art Education Program encompasses two main disciplines: art and education. Our students grow into accomplished artists and experienced teachers who can impart their love and knowledge for the arts to students of all ages. The Art Education Program also provides the tools for our students to become thoughtful and critical thinkers engaged with the broader field of art education, who advocate for the arts beyond the classroom, and who understand the importance of providing diverse populations with access to art education. Students in the Art Education Program are enrolled in the College of Education and Social Services, and fulfill requirements in general education, professional art education, professional education courses, studio art, art history, and related subjects. Graduates satisfy the College of Education and Social Services requirements for teacher licensure in art for grades pre-K through 12.

Admission to the Art Education Program

Admission to the Art Ed Program for Undergraduate Students: Undergraduate students may declare their intention to be an Art Education major on their application to the University. They will be enrolled in the College of Education and Social Services (CESS). Undeclared students and students changing majors need to be enrolled in the College of Education and Social Services (CESS) to become an Art Education major. To enroll, they should contact CESS Student Services Office at (802) 656-3468.

Admission into Professional Licensure

While students may declare their intention to be art education majors and apply for that major, students must be reviewed to pass into the Professional Licensure phase of the program, which begins in the fall of junior year. A program review process will be conducted during the second semester of students' sophomore year (for students transferring into the program or into the university, the time frame for the review will be determined by the Art Education Director).

Criteria for passing licensure program review (2nd semester sophomore year):

  • A 3.0 minimum GPA
  • For students with a GPA below 3.0, they will go through an interview with Art Education Faculty, show a portfolio of their own artwork, and write a statement of their intentions and beliefs regarding their choice of major and their development since beginning the program. The Art Education Faculty will then make a determination whether the students can continue into the professional phase.

Admission to the Art Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Preparation Program:

The Art Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Preparation Program (PBTP) is designed for individuals who have a bachelor's degree in Studio Art and who want to become licensed to teach in Vermont. Applicants who have a degree in an area other than Studio Art will need to provide evidence of 12 credits in Studio Art and 16 credits of appropriate course work in Art History.
