GI histology

Small intestine

In general:

  • Villi
  • Crypts of Leiberkuhn
  • Paneth cells

Duodenum

  • Brunner's glands in submucosa
  • Plicae circularis

Jejunum

  • Plicae circularis
  • Long vasa recta
  • Few arcades

Ileum

  • Unapparent plicae circularis
  • Short vasa recta
  • Numerous arcades

vs. Large intestine

  • Small intestine has crypts and villi, large intestine has crypts but no villi
  • Small intestine has few mucous cells, large intestine has many

Stomach

Cardia

  • Shallow gastric pits
  • Few parietal and chief cells

Corpus/fundus

  • Deep gastric pits
  • Numerous parietal and chief cells

Pylorus

  • Convoluted gastric glands → numerous glands seen in cross section
  • Height of glandular portion = depth of gastric pits

Appendix

vs. Large intestine

  • Both have crypts but no villi
  • Appendix has smaller lumen
  • Appendix has more lymphatic tissue

vs. Ileum

  • Both have abundant lymphatic tissue
  • Appendix has crypts but no villi, ileum has crypts and villi

Reproduction

Efferent ductules

vs. Seminiferous tubules

  • Scalloped epithelial lining (due to varied cuboidal, pseudostratified ciliated epithelium)
  • Outside the tunica albuginea

vs. Epididymis

  • Epididymis has smooth apical lining
  • Pseudostratified columnar, stereocilia
