DFES Strategy & Performance

DFES uses the Balanced Scorecard performance management system to guide its strategic planning and measure its performance. The Balanced Scorecard approach translates mission and strategy into objectives and measures across multiple business "perspectives." The DFES strategy considers four perspectives: financial/resource, customer, internal processes, and learning and growth. DFES has chosen to use Balanced Scorecard method for its strengths in aligning diverse units, linking operational learning with strategic learning, and focus on long-term strategy.

DFES' Balanced Scorecard has four major components (below). The DFES Senior Leadership team will complete the development of the third component, the "scorecard" by September 2012 and begin reporting in December 2012.

  1. Mission, vision, values, and customer service statements
  2. Strategy map
  3. Scorecard -- a matrix showing, for each the four scorecard perspectives, DFES's strategic objectives, the measure(s) by which we will demonstrate success for that objective, and the initiatives or projects we will undertake to achieve success
  4. Reporting -- DFES will begin regular reporting on our strategic initiatives, measures, and objectives in January 2013 to track our actual performance against our desired targets

DFES will use its performance management system to help direct the allocation of resources, to assess and report regularly on our performance and progress toward strategic objectives, to communicate our successes, and to be transparent about how we are managing UVM’s resources.
