The Kora is an instrument native to Mali and can best be described as being part harp and part lute. In the hands of a master musician like Grammy nominee Mamadou Diabate, it is capable of creating ethereal and complex music that weaves a spell around the listener. Diabate is a member of the Jeli (Musician) caste of the Mandiga tribe of West Africa. His musical lineage goes back seven centuries to Sunjata Keita, the conqueror of the Malian empire. He is one of a handful of Kora players bringing this music to the world today.
