Der et al. 2009 on Pteridium
combines great world-level biogeography with an American source
story for Hawaii with the geography of allopolyploidy (as it has
two different chloroplasr genomes for the Costa Rican
tetraploid.). Der, J.P. et al. 2009. GLOBAL
CHLOROPLAST PHYLOGENY AND BIOGEOGRAPHY OF BRACKEN ( PTERIDIUM ;
DENNSTAEDTIACEAE). AJB.
Marengo 1954 and 1959 reporting on spore development in Onoclea,
Osmunda, and Polypodium virginianum clearly illustrates the
two pairs of spores in a monolete tetraploid oriented at right
angles ---- add to intro lecture illustrations.
Illustration in the 1959 paper very useful for comparison.

Schölch, Annette .2000. Relations
between submarginal and marginal sori in ferns I. The sori
of selected Hypolepidaceae and Dennstaedtiaceae. Plant Syst.
Evol. 220:161-183 Plant Systematics and Evolution.
The first of a very important series of papers providing careful
insight into soral development across a wide array of ferns..
