Der et al. 2009 on Pteridium combines great world-level biogeography with an American source story for Hawaii with the geography of allopolyploidy (as it has two different chloroplasr genomes for the Costa Rican tetraploid.).  Der, J.P. et al. 2009.  GLOBAL CHLOROPLAST PHYLOGENY AND BIOGEOGRAPHY OF BRACKEN ( PTERIDIUM ; DENNSTAEDTIACEAE).  AJB.

Marengo 1954 and 1959 reporting on spore development in Onoclea, Osmunda, and Polypodium virginianum clearly illustrates the two pairs of spores in a monolete tetraploid oriented at right angles ---- add to intro lecture illustrations.   Illustration in the 1959 paper very useful for comparison.  See also MArengo 1978 for more refs.
