RE:ΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚ Update
UVM Police Services has now completed a thorough internal investigation of the police response to the report of an armed robbery in a campus residence hall on November 6, 2002, involving detaining of a student who was misidentified as a suspect.Κ The investigation clearly shows that serious mistakes were made, and all within my administration view this matter with profound concern.ΚΚ Based on the report findings, Chief Gary Margolis has commenced disciplinary action consistent with the Teamsters collective bargaining contract requirements.

We are holding people accountable for their actions, and are instituting preventive mechanisms for the future.Κ I am in the process of assembling a team of professionals with the requisite expertise and objectivity necessary to review the University´s response to the specific incident, and to help us develop strategies to preclude a repeat occurrence of such a situation.Κ I will be announcing that team in December.Κ As well, we will work to create opportunities for open dialogue on this and other important issues related to campus climate at Vermont.

On Monday, December 2nd, key members of my administrative leadership team and I will be present in Memorial Lounge, Waterman Building, from 4 to 5 p.m. to answer questions and address concerns.

This has been a most painful and difficult series of events, but I am confident that we will learn from this and be better able to improve the environment at UVM for all members of our community.
