As you can see, I've added some food for thought here. Edit/comment/post away!

scanner machine
I wasn't sure if the scanner image fit appropriately or not into this list, so I put a note about it under CommonsHardwareIssues.

I think it's a software issue. Not having the drivers was an oversight on the previous image. The drivers for these scanners are user-unfriendly though... it would be nice to have scanners that are actually plug and play wsith XP/OSX (those scanners ARE plug and play on the knoppix CD)

More Scanner -
Could we make sure drivers are in place for OCR (I think it comes with OmniPage). Acually, if there is a bit of money to spend I'd love to see a copy of ABbYy Finereader on there - it's the best! I've also added Adobe Acrobat Pro to the software list.

Are you sure OCR is driver based and not software? Anyone try Simple OCR? I tried it a few years ago and it worked pretty well, but it's been a while. It doesn't hand hold. But it's free.

= Works (wps) to Word (doc)
We might want a text converter utilty or at least something that will convert works files (wps) to word files (doc) or txt. I know many students do not purchase Microsoft Office and get a free copy of Works. I do not know of a program off the top of my head, but we should look at Open Office. Open Office is a free open source suite much like Microsoft Office. I am not sure if it will open the wps, but I do know that they just released a new version and it does have some conversions ablity. Just some food for thought.

The wps extention is listed in the "Open" dialog for OO.o I've not tried it so I can't vouch for it working on all wps... but I'd bet it does.
