Author Talk and Panel Discussion with 'Public Health Detectives' on Tap

Mark Pendergrast, author of Inside the Outbreaks, hosts a talk on February 21 titled "Investigating Outbreaks: The Epidemic Intelligence Service, True Public Health Detectives." The talk begins at 4:30 p.m. and includes a panel discussion with Epidemic Intelligence Service officers who have worked in Vermont. At 5:30 p.m. there will be a reception and book signing. The event will be held in Medical Education Center 200.

Since 1951, EIS officers have worked internationally to investigate new diseases such as Legionnaires' Disease, Lassa Fever, Ebola, AIDS, and Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. Vermont has benefited from EIS officers assigned here by the CDC and many UVM graduates have become EIS offices. This event provides an opportunity to hear more about the work of these elite public health detectives.

Pendergrast's talk and the panel discussion is sponsored by the Vermont Public Health Association. It is co-sponsored by the UVM College of Nursing and Health Sciences, UVM College of Medicine, and the Vermont Department of Health.
