Students in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences consistently rate the quality of their academic advising above average.

We find that year after year, students in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences often seek information on the following topics. If your question remains unanswered after reading these, contact the Office of Student Services (E-mail:cnhsoss@uvm.edu).

Who is my advisor?

Each student is assigned to an advisor within their major department. Students may contact the Department’s administrative office or the Office of Student Services cnhsoss@uvm.edu to find out the name of their advisor. To change advisors, students must contact the major department directly.

When should I contact my advisor?

All students are encouraged to contact their advisor at the beginning of each semester and as needed throughout the semester. Each advisor posts office hours as well as opportunities for appointments if office hours conflict with a student’s schedule. Advisors are also available via phone and e-mail. For students who have either academic questions or concerns of a more personal nature, contacting their academic advisor is a great place to start.

What are the college's (CNHS) academic standards?

It is each student's responsibility to read and become familiar with the CNHS Policies on Low Scholarship. Students with questions about any of the information contained in the policy should contact their advisor or the Office of Student Services, cnhsoss@uvm.edu for clarification. Read the Policy on Low Scholarship.

How do I transfer into the College of Nursing and Health Sciences?

Currently enrolled UVM undergraduate students and external transfer applicants who are in good academic standing with a GPA of 2.0 or higher are eligible to transfer. However, due to the competitive nature of most of the majors in CNHS, accepted students have GPAs well above the minimum requirement. It is important for all students interested in transferring to CNHS to review the Policy on Transfer Admission to CNHS Programs in the Student Services section of this site. There you may also find important forms and applications.

Prior to the pre-registration period each semester, the College’s Office of Student Services will offer several group information sessions for students interested in transferring into one of the majors.

Note: The Department of Nursing, upon careful review of the current number of first year students and available resources, has decided that the program cannot accommodate any transfer students for the 2008-2009 academic year.

Can I declare a minor?

CNHS students may declare a minor from the selected list of approved minors (see list within the minor department’s home college/school). Students must complete the Minor declaration form (available in the Student Services, For Current Students, section of this site) and acquire signatures of approval from a faculty representative from the chosen minor department as well as their academic advisor. The form must eventually be returned to the Office of Student Services.

Can I take a leave of absence?

With prior approval, currently enrolled students who are in good academic standing may take a voluntary leave of absence. Re-entry is guaranteed but class placement is contingent upon the availability of a seat within the class. If no seat is immediately available, the student will be awarded the first available seat in a subsequent class per the Policy on Re-Entry into CNHS Undergraduate Programs. Students who wish to take a leave should review the policy and the and discuss ramifications with their advisor. Read the re-entry policy on the Student Services, For Current Students, section of this site.

What happens if I withdraw from a class?

The withdrawal period and policy is posted on the Registrar’s Office website.

It is important for CNHS students to note that withdrawal from a class (es) may prevent a student from progression within the major and the decision to withdraw should be done in consultation with the academic advisor.

Only in rare situations are students allowed to withdraw from a course after the deadline. Students must provide documentation regarding the circumstances which prevented them from submitting the request in a timely manor and have both their instructor and advisor’s signatures on the form. All requests for withdrawal after the deadline must be reviewed by the college’s Student Standards Committee for approval before a student can withdraw from a class after the deadline.

What do I do if I am experiencing health or personal problems?

If a student is ill and only missing one day of classes, they should contact each professor by phone or e-mail directly and leave a clear message including their name, contact information, the date, the name and section of the class and reason for missing class.

If a student is ill and/or having some personal problem that result in missing more than one day of classes, students should contact either their advisor or the Office of Student Services (OSS). OSS will notify each instructor via e-mail. However, it is important to remember that it is the student’s responsibility to follow-up and contact each professor to discuss ways in which missed worked may be completed.

Students who experience on-going medical or personal problems during an academic semester must be proactive in their attempt to seek assistance. Such issues have the potential to affect a student’s academic performance and jeopardize their good academic standing. Students are advised to contact their academic advisor immediately to discuss an appropriate plan of action that may include withdrawal from, or incompletes in, certain classes. Students who wait until the completion of the semester to seek assistance or raise concern will have limited options for recourse.

Who do I contact if I want to study abroad?

The UVM Office of International Education (OIE) is a good place to begin looking at study abroad opportunities and options. Additionally, the Department of Nursing has an option for nursing majors with third-year class standing to apply to study abroad at Edith Cowan University in Perth, Australia.

It is imperative that students who are considering an overseas experience discuss with their academic advisor so that the student does not jeopardize losing their place in their academic major and/or class.

Where can I find the major requirements for my major?

Each department in the college maintains its own website where you can access your major's curriculum and requirements. Find your major's requirements in the departments of:
