What are you most proud of as a student in CMSI:
I am most proud of how far I have come as an individual since I enrolled as an undergraduate in the Department. Al ofthe Communication Sciences professors have allowed me to grow academically and personally to help me fully understand my passion for improving communication among society. My position as the Audiology Assistant and my interactionwith people from the community have helped define what I have learned and what I have yet to learn in my future studies and career. I am also grateful to have helped cooridnate the peer advising program with Barry Guitar, as I have been able to connect with several peers in the Department.

Has there been any instructor, class, activity that has sent you in the future goal direction? Liz Adams and Dinah Smith are two wonderful influences that have been very supportive of my decision to enter the profession of audiology.

Plans after graduation: After taking the next year off to teach and travel abroad, I will enroll in the Doctorate Program at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in Fall 2009..

Briana Horgan is the recipient of the Rodney Everhart Award.

Hometown: Arlington Heights, Illinois

Extracurricular Activities at UVM:  I really found my passion as a member of FeelGood, the student movement that runs a non-profit deli to raise money for an to chronic hunger and poverty. I've enjoyed education the UVM and Burlington community on the issues surrounding hunger in the developing world.

Clubs, positions held: Speech and Hearing Club President, FeelGood President.

What are you most proud of as a student in CMSI:
I'm proud of the fact that the moment I stepped into my first CMSI class my first semester of my first year, I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my career. Not many First Year's can say that. I'm proud that I've been able to develop that passion throughout my four years as a Communication Sciences (CMSI) student.

Has there been any instructor, class, activity that has sent you in the future goal direction? Patty Prelock has really inspired me with her compassion and leadership. I think she embodies a lot of wonderful qualities and ideals that make her a role model for me as a professional. I also enjoyed working with (former CMSI Grad) Courtney Ehlers in her grad research. Her dedication and friendship pushed me to really think about my decisions in the future.

Plans after graduation: I'm planning on attending grad school for Speech-Language Pathology in the school year of 2009-2010. In the meantime, I'll be moving out to Seattle to work and to continue my efforts in working for social justice.

Leah Grossman is the recipient of the Margaret Kyte Award.

Hilary T. Roberts

Hilary Roberts

Hometown: Burlington, Vermont

Extracurricular Activities at UVM: I assisted students as a writing tutor in the UVM learning Co-operative.

What are you most proud of as a student in CMSI: I love our CMSI Department. I began college as an English major, which I still am, but realized that my heart was in helping people. The Department of Communication Sciences is a perfect opportunity for this sort of rewarding experience. Our small department and dedicated professors make learning fun and inspiring.

Has there been any instructor, class, activity that has sent you in the future goal direction? Absolutely. My English 50 professor recommended me for a position to tutor writing and suggested I take a grammar class. I subsequently took CMSI 164 (Structure of the English Language) and discovered what I wanted to do for a career. It was serendipitous.

Plans after graduation: This Fall I am looking forward to enrolling in the Communication Sciences' Graduate Program at UVM.

Hilary T. Roberts is the recipient of the Communication Sciences Departmental Award.
