Undergraduate Spotlight - CMSI Major - Erin Maskell-Ferland '09 , of Franklin, Vermont: She was awarded a McNair Scholarship in her junior year. This April, Erin presented her senior honor's research at the second annual UVM Student Research Conference.

UVM offers several funding opportunities for research, including the McNair Scholars Summer Internship.


Advanced Work - Coursework and Research

Ongoing work on a programmatic study of temperament, speech, language, perceptual and motor variables differentiating young children who stutter from those who do not stutter being conducted by Professor Barry Guitar. Historically, students with strong academic records have been recruited for work that can lead to an honors thesis and possibly continued into graduate school.

Senior students have an opportunity to work with Professor Patricia Prelock in her play research with children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), as well as research in the use of social stories to support the social interaction & communiation of children with ASD.

Internships

CMSI Policy Guidelines For Clinical Internships

  • Students can do 3 credits per semester and 6 total during their time at UVM
  • Internships are available during the regular academic year on a limited basis; some in-house internships may be available in the summer on a limited basis
  • Number of contact hours per week should be about 10-15 hours
  • Culminating paper/project

Students will be given a list of possible internship supervisors not necessarily with their CCC’s and then find a person who is willing to take them on as an undergraduate clinical intern

Audiology Internship

Senior students who are interested in the field of audiology and wish to obtain some practical experience in this area of study can work with patients at the E. M. Luse Center for a semester. Students obtain knowledge in the testing of hearing, the fitting of hearing aids and the follow-up process, and aural rehabilitation. The purpose of this internship is to increase students’ confidence and knowledge in the areas of hearing assessment and habilitation prior to beginning graduate school in audiology.
