Long Trail 2008

The Long Trail, Vermont's footpath in the wilderness. The Long Trail is the nation;s oldest long distance hiking trail. The idea for it was conceived in 1910 and the actual trail was finally completed in 1930. Benton MacCaye (credited for envisioning the Appalachian Trail) developed the idea for the Appalachian Trail while on Stratton Mountain in Vermont during the construction of the Long Trail.

I first hiked the Long Trail in the fall of 2004. It was my first major backpacking trip. Previous to that, I had only done a few overnight trips and nothing more than a few days. I was nervous and uncertain if my own two legs could carry me that far. I solo hiked it again in the fall of 2005, hiked the southern section during my 2007 thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail, and hiked 100 miles of the northern section in the fall of 2008.
